The awards show was started by National Action Network in 2009 and has honored luminaries like TV One/Radio One Founder and Executive Cathy Hughes; Founder, Chairman & Chief Executive of Lucasfilm, George Lucas; Actor, Director, Producer and Author, Tyler Perry; the family of the late George Steinbrenner; owner of the Chicago Bulls Jerry Reinsdorf; Entertainment Mogul and Chairman of Bad Boy Worldwide Entertainment Group, Sean Combs; and Award-winning actress Phylicia Rashad among others.
National Action Network (NAN) is one of the leading civil rights organizations in the nation. NAN works extensively to promote a modern civil rights agenda, which emphasizes a standard of decency for all people regardless of race or sex, social justice for all communities, and improvement in race relations. Through the years, NAN has served as a megaphone for the voiceless and an advocate for those in need.
